Isoline retrieval: An optimal sounding method for validation of advected contours

چکیده

The study of chaotic mixing is important for its potential to improve our understanding of fluid systems. Contour advection simulations provide a good model of the phenomenon by tracking the evolution of one or more contours or isolines of a trace substance to a high level of precision. The most accurate method of validating an advected contour is to divide the tracer concentration into discrete ranges and perform a maximum likelihood classification, a method that we term, “isoline retrieval.” Conditional probabilities generated as a result provide excellent error characterization. In this study, a water vapour isoline of 0.001 mass-mixing-ratio is advected over five days in the upper troposphere and compared with high-resolution AMSU (Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit) satellite retrievals. The goal is to find the same fine-scale, chaotic mixing in the isoline retrievals as seen in the advection simulations. Some of the filaments generated by the simulations show up in the conditional probabilities as areas of reduced probability. By rescaling the probabilities, the filaments may be revealed in the isoline retrievals proper with little effect on the overall accuracy. Limitations imposed by the specific context, i.e. water-vapour retrieved with AMSU in the upper troposphere, are discussed. Nonetheless, isoline retrieval is shown to be a highly effective technique for atmospheric sounding, showing good agreement with both ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts) assimilation data and radiosonde measurements. Envisat MIPAS measurements of CFC-11: retrieval, validation, and climatology

From July 2002 to March 2004 the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) aboard the European Space Agency’s Environmental Satellite (Envisat) measured nearly continuously mid infrared limb radiance spectra. These measurements are utilised to retrieve the global distribution of the chlorofluorocarbon CFC11 by applying a new fast forward model for Envisat MIPAS and an ac...

A new model of intonation for use with speech synthesis and recognition

This paper describes a synthesis from analysis scheme for producing natural sounding intonation for speech synthesis. The paper presents a new method of describing F0 contours in terms of three basic phonetic intonation elements. Details are given of an automatic system for labelling F0 contours, which could be used for speech recognition purposes. Current work on extracting a phonological desc...

Natural-sounding Speech Synthesis Using Variable-length Units1

The goal of this work was to develop a speech synthesis system which concatenates variable-length units to create naturalsounding speech. Our initial work in this area showed that by careful design of system responses to ensure consistent intonation contours, natural-sounding speech synthesis was achievable with wordand phrase-level concatenation. In order to extend the flexibility of this fram...

Characterization of Atmospheric Profile Retrievals From Limb Sounding Observations of an Inhomogeneous Atmosphere

Limb sounders measure atmospheric radiation that is dependent on a radial and angular distribution of temperature and atmospheric constituents. Based on this dependency, we perform and characterize both two dimensional (radial and angular) and one dimensional (vertical) limb profile retrievals of a distribution of carbon monoxide (CO), which represents a simulated plume off the coast of south-e...
